Over 80.2% of Koreans have now received their second vaccination. However, with the emergence of the Omicron variant Korea has made some changes to its COVID-19 travel policies. At present only five cases of Omicron have been confirmed in the country, from recent international arrivals, however officials are concerned there may be more. December 1st and 2nd saw over 5,000 new confirmed COVID-19 cases per day nationwide with over 700 critically ill patients. That amounts to a daily average of 4,200 new infections from November 27th to Dec. 3.

From December 2nd onward, Korea has suspended all quarantine exemptions for the time being. All Korean citizens and foreigners entering Korea will have to undergo a 10-day quarantine period, regardless of vaccination status.

On a travel note unrelated to COVID-19, starting from September Korea has implemented a new requirement for those traveling to Korea without a visa, called the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA). Travelers can apply for the K-ETA authorization quickly online at the K-ETA webpage (https://www.k-eta.go.kr/) or via a smartphone application. The K-ETA must be received 24 hours before traveling and has a fee of KRW 10,000 (less than USD 10). For K-ETA application eligibility check the webpage (https://www.k-eta.go.kr/portal/guide/viewetaalification.do).
